The 2021 Met Gala: Best & Worst Dressed

The Met Gala returned on Monday night, Sept. 13 after being cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, and we rounded up the best and worst dressed of the night.

The theme? In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. What was believed to be an ode to American fashion and designers, many celebrities and stylists (per usual) interpreted the theme differently. Trends of the night included gold, reds, mesh, and of course, sparkle. Long trains and big ballgowns were also in full force tonight, but they usually are at the Met Gala, given that it's fashion's biggest and most glamorous night.

But the real questions are who lived up to the high standards of the Met Gala steps, who was on theme, and who was a huge disappointment? We have all the answers for you.

Best Dressed of the night goes to Kendall Jenner. She looks absolutely perfect in this Givenchy diamond gown is inspired by Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady." Given that it's inspired by an American icon, we will say this was on theme.

Best Dress Couple award goes to Steph and Ayesha Curry. Not only do they look incredible individually, but their looks compliment each other super well. Not to mention, Steph didn't wear a boring, plain black suit. (*cough* Channing Tatum *cough*)

Best Dressed Guy goes to Timothee Chamalet. Let's be real, this night is where the women shine, but as co-chair for this year, Chamalet looked dapper in this white suit with American youth fashion influences like the socks & shoes and the casual pants.

Best Dressed for the Theme goes to none other than Jennifer Lopez. Are you surprised? JLo always serves her best looks at the Met Gala. Her look is the pinnacle of 2000's American fashion with some modern influences thrown in and, of course, a dabble of country with her hat.

Honorable Mention goes to Billie Eilish, Yara Shahidi, Maluma, Iman, Barbie Ferreira, and Amanda Gorman. They all looked so fantastic and were on theme!

Worst Dressed of the night goes to... a lot of people. But we're crowning Kim Petras. The legit horse head, the long pony tail, the poofy and heavily printed dress - way too much. The Camp theme was two years ago, Kim!

Worst Dressed Couple in attendance? Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. What ever happened to not matching your eye shadow to your gown? Also, for some reason, guys in suits with no shirt on is a trend this season and we are not here for it. Love them, but they just look a mess.

Biggest Disappointment is awarded to Kim Kardashian. Was she trying to look like a shadow? Not to mention, it's almost exactly the same look she wore days ago at New York Fashion Week. One user on Twitter even said "oh look, the Taliban was invited to the Met Gala." Yikes! This isn't fashion. This isn't camp. This isn't couture. Honestly, this could have been Kim's moment with a lot of other big stars like Zendaya and Nicki Minaj not able to make it and influencers in attendance dressed terribly. But she blew it. At this point, it just seems like she is trying to be talked about for anything. Too much time with Kanye perhaps?

Dishonorable mention goes to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Is there anything more ironic than writing "Tax the Rich" on your custom, designer gown at one of the planet's most exclusive parties with a ticket price tag of $35,000? Cringe. Dan Levy also walks away with this dishonor. Props to him for trying something different, but his look would have been more suitable for 2019's Camp theme.

One of the most controversial looks of the night came from Lil Nas X. His outfit changes were very similar to Lady Gaga's iconic 4-look moment that just happened at the last gala. Maybe if this was done in a few years, it would have been good as a tribute to Gaga, but this just looked like straight copying. Not to mention, his second look was just not it, and his last look was less than impressive. But his first look was definitely attention-grabbing and people on social media were so polarized on this entrance.
