David Archuleta is embracing a new era of self-expression, and what better way to celebrate than by paying tribute to one of his biggest musical inspirations? The American Idol alum has just released his rendition of George Michael’s classic hit, “Freedom,” in honor of the song’s 35th anniversary.

Archuleta, who has been on a transformative journey of self-discovery in recent years, brings fresh energy and emotional depth to the beloved anthem. His powerful vocals breathe new life into the track while staying true to the song’s core message of empowerment and individuality. Produced by Grammy-winning hitmaker Phil Lawrence—who has worked with Bruno Mars, Adele, and CeeLo Green—this version of “Freedom” blends a modern edge with a deep reverence for the original.

For David, this release is deeply personal. “When I came out, George’s music took on a whole new meaning for me,” he shared. “I could feel him breaking out through his music, and I craved to experience that myself. It helped push me forward in my own journey.” He relates to the lyrics on a profound level, recalling his own experience of being thrust into the public eye as a teenager on Idol, only to later redefine himself in a way that felt authentic.

David’s connection to George Michael runs deep. During American Idol Season 7, he performed “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” in the finale, the same night George made a surprise appearance. That moment stuck with him, and years later, he revisited the song with a new perspective. “The meaning took on so much more than when I first heard it as a closeted 17-year-old on Idol,” he admitted. “It gave me hope and empowerment when I needed it most.”

In 2023, David had the honor of inducting George Michael into Project Angel Food’s “Path of Angels” star dedication ceremony in Hollywood. Reflecting on the late icon’s legacy, Archuleta remarked, “George Michael shattered barriers and defied stereotypes. His honesty became a beacon of hope for so many in our community.”

With his cover of “Freedom,” David Archuleta is carrying that torch forward, offering both a nostalgic tribute to George’s impact and a fresh interpretation for a new generation of listeners. As he continues embracing new creative avenues—including a newfound love for dance music and festival culture—his artistic evolution is more exciting than ever. “EDM festivals and dancing have given me a new way to feel connected and free,” he says. “It’s encouraged me to be more fearless and expressive.”

In addition, David Archuleta's 2024 single, "Hell Together" was well-received by critics and fans alike, even winning our Best of 2024 Award for Best Song.
