2020 has come with a fair share of new artists, but it has also come with a fair share of familiar faces making big comebacks. Some of those comebacks are from people who we expected, and some of them are from people whose careers we thought were over. Let’s explore some of the top comebacks that we’ve seen so far in 2020.
Alicia Keys
Coming off the success of R&B radio #1 hit “Show Me Love” featuring Miguel, Alicia Keys continued the campaign for her new album Alicia. Alicia started the year with her single “Underdog,” which seemed to be inescapable due to the Amazon Music commercial featuring the song. COVID-19 put her summer tour plans on hold, but Alicia moved forward with a September album release. The new album Alicia was released on September 18 and features the current singles “So Done” featuring Khalid and “Love Looks Better” produced by Ryan Tedder. The album also features collaborations with Jill Scott, Snoh Aalegra, Tierra Whack, and more! Listen here.
Black Eyed Peas
One of the more unlikely comebacks of 2020 was the Black Eyed Peas, without Fergie. Complete with a new sound and new member J. Rey Soul, the Black Eyed Peas went all out with promoting their 2019 single "RITMO" featuring J. Balvin. “RITMO” peaked in the top 30 of the Hot 100 and the top 10 of the pop radio charts! B.E.P. followed that up with the release of a second single “Mamacita” featuring Ozuna, which also met success on the Billboard charts. They topped it off with the release of Translation; their Latin inspired album with features from Shakira, Tyga, Maluma, and other well-known artists.
Jason Derulo
Jason Derulo had one of the most surprising comebacks of 2020, and we can credit it all to TikTok. Jason currently has 36 million followers on TikTok. On his page, you will find fun videos with some of his famous friends, pranks, dances, and music. Jason's new song "Savage Love" even started on TikTok, but it didn’t stop there. "Savage Love" became a major hit in the US and (so far) has peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other standout tracks that Jason released this year include “Coño” and “Take You Dancing.” Don’t expect Jason's comeback to die down either. A BTS remix of "Savage Love" came out on Friday, October 2!
Justin Bieber
After almost five years without an album, Justin Bieber started the new year with his hit singles “Yummy” and “Intentions” off his new album Changes. Changes came out on Valentine’s Day and had high profile features from Kehlani, Post Malone, and Travis Scott. Keeping up with the trend of artists releasing music more often, Justin has continued to release new music throughout 2020 including “Stuck With U” featuring Ariana Grande and “Holy” featuring Chance the Rapper. The rumor mill is filled with rumors about another album coming later this fall. Only time will tell, but we think that another Bieber album would make 2020 better!
Miranda Lambert
Although her 2016 album was a massive country hit, this comeback was more personal in that it's her first album without the shadow of her divorce with Blake Shelton looming over her. Miranda Lambert’s comeback began in 2019 with the release of her single “It All Comes Out in the Wash” and her seventh studio album Wildcard. However, her comeback took flight with the album's second single "Bluebird," which took country radio by storm and secured Miranda her first solo number 1 single at country radio in years! It’s safe to say that Miranda isn’t settling down anytime soon with the release of “Settling Down” to country radio earlier this month!
Trey Songz
Trey Songz is another name that hasn’t been talked about in a while. Despite having minor streaming hits over the past few years, Trey's last major hit single was "Slow Motion" in 2015. One of Trey's recent singles looks to be breaking that trend. "Back Home" with Summer Walker is currently in the top 10 at R&B radio and has over 17 million streams to date on Spotify. The second single, "Circles," assumed to be off Trey's upcoming project, is also making waves on Spotify and urban radio. Listen to Trey's new music on your favorite digital streaming platform!
Usher
Usher is defending his legacy! 2019 brought high profile collaborations with Summer Walker & Ella Mai. 2020 is bringing more high-profile collaborations including a reunion with Ludacris and Lil Jon and an appearance on NBC's Songland for a song that featured Tyga. Usher’s new single “Bad Habits” is an earworm and easily his best output in years. Keep an eye on Usher, he’s been teasing a new project for a while now. It looks like “Bad Habits” could be just what he needs to release it!
