2019 was a great year for music, and a BIG year for new artists! Trends of 2019 include females dominating the Billboard music charts and new artists taking the spotlight. The last year has brought us the incredible new talents of Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Normani, and so many more. So many great albums were released in last the 12 months, and we're going to count down the top 10.
10) Naive by Andy Grammer
The "Honey I'm Good" singer released his fourth studio album this year, and although it didn't see much commercial success and has yet to hit the mainstream, this album is a fantastic piece of work and full of emotions. He even co-write every song on the album. It's nothing crazy special, but just a solid adult contemporary album that will have you playing the full album (I know, that's rare) on repeat.
9) Lo-Fi Soul by Haley Reinhart
A beautiful blend of alternative and soulful rock mixed with pop and R&B elements, this album is sure to have a song that pleases most listeners. From the album cover, to the hypnotizing song lyrics and music, Reinhart bares her Lo-Fi Soul for all to hear. It is her first independent album full of originals that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
8) Romance by Camila Cabello
Following a string of singles and collab with boyfriend Shawn Mendes, Cabello released her sophomore album. Although it was not her biggest commercial hit, it is a textbook good album. It is thematic and weaves a story throughout the lyrics all about love and romance. It definitely deserved better commercial performance, but at least Cabello put out a strong piece of work.
7) Fine Line by Harry Styles
An honest yet experimental album for Styles' sophomore album, it blends pop, rock, and vintage yet modern sounds flawlessly, making for a stellar piece of work. Although it is shown throughout with rock-pop jams like Watermelon Sugar and ballads like Falling, for me, the standout song is his third single, Adore You. It mixes all of the rock and pop elements throughout the album into one song that has mainstream and radio appeal.
6) GIRL by Maren Morris
Another sophomore album on the list comes from country-pop breakout star Maren Morris. This album showed off her versatility and solidified her as a commercial success and not a one-hit-album wonder. Although a bit more pop-sounding and cross-genre than her debut album, her fans and critics alike praised this album.
5) Lover by Taylor Swift
A 180 degree spin from her last album Reputation, this showed Swift's softer side of pop and her versatility lyrically and vocally. Although not as stellar as her previous albums, it's no doubt Swift churns out excellent singles and albums that chart, sell, and rake in awards.
4) Homecoming: The Live Album by Beyonce
Okay, of course this was going to be in the top 5. Queen Bey was at it again in 2019 releasing a live album from her record-breaking Coachella performance. With hits like "Crazy In Love" and "Check On It" from her earlier days to her mega hits like "Drunk In Love" and her most recent critically-acclaimed music from the album Lemonade, this live is the perfect playlist!
3) Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande
Grande's fifth studio album surprised many fans with the launch of pop culture mega-hit "thank u, next" (the single), which came very shortly after her fourth studio album, Sweetener. An album, music video, and phrase is now forever cemented in pop culture history.
2) When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish
This is the ultimate debut breakout album. It's gone on to win Eilish countless awards and even a few GRAMMY noms. She even co-wrote a few songs on the album at just 17 years old! Impressive, to say the least.
1) Norman F*cking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey
With her most critically-acclaimed album yet, Lana Del Rey takes our top spot for album of the year! Full of vulnerability and sheer songwriting and vocal talent, this is her best work yet and to be honest, it'll be hard for her to top!
Honorable Mention: IGOR by Tyler the Creator, Hollywood's Bleeding by Post Malone, Threads by Sheryl Crow, Heard It In A Past Life by Maggie Rogers.
